Are you fresh for Skatefresh ? A crazy experience in tulips

von

… and if it rains, we skate anyway.
These were the memories of the Skatefresh-Tour 2005:

It was fresh –let’s say freezing cold- when we dropped out of the tent the first day, raindrops on our heads and frozen dew on the gras. With a polyphonic Goede morgen, Good Morning, Buenas dias, Bonjour, Morgääääään… and Dutch breakfast hoping for the sun coming out.
Just in time when we put on our skates the clouds disappeared; however the cold and the wind accompanied us. What was still in our memories from last year?
The cute villages, the blossoming tulip fields, the international mix of skaters from Japan to Texas, from Norway to South Africa and the pain in the legs, which NEVER EVER want to roll on Dutch cobblestones anymore.
What shall we expect this year? We are on the Tour again, but please enjoy to read yourself.
Already with the arrival at the camping site the enthusiasm can be felt, a large hello welcomes us from well-known last-year fellows.

The party on the first evening is affected by the joy to meet again which overcomes immediately on the Skatefresh beginners.
By the time more and more leave the campfire to dream about the large Holland tour which is to begin early on the next morning around 7am. But where will it start???

Around 9 o’clock all skaters from France, Belgique, Nederland, Latvia, Sverige, the States and wherever they are from enter the bus to be brought to the unkown starting point.
What a surprise – the DUSFOR-team was nearly at home again: from a border place in Germany it goes over a dirt road back into the Netherlands.
The journey begins.

From the land of Waal en Maas passing by Nijmegen we end up at the banks of the Rhine. Utrecht is not the best place for skaters “crossing the city for groups of skaters forbidden!” Therefore we remain in the picturesque mansion quarters at the outermost edge of the city, passing little channels, cute little castles and watchtowers skating through the forest to our next campground.
The fast teams 1 and 2 unloaded the truck already, prepared the social areas and give a warm welcome to the successively arriving teams. Now it’s time for a beer!

Then we look for our stuff like tent, bags, sleeping bag, … in the enormous heap of luggage. After pitching the tents it’s time to relax in the sun.

The Skatefresh-Team already organized a special dinner either in a restaurant around or a big pizzaparty at a place in nowhere. The day ends with campfire romance, red wine and chats about skating across the continents.

The next morning the sun wakes up the skaters promising a brilliant new day on skates. After a cosy breakfast the routine begins: doing the dishes, rolling the sleepingbags, folding the tents, filling up the watersupply and giving a hand to load the truck together. The truck will accompany us the day for jollying us along with snacks and “lekker” dutch cookies.

Before we can start rolling, there is a short briefing for the day. A special event takes place: “the one and only Skatefresh Award”. The most social skater of the day with special performance within its team receives this desired document. Either he tried to keep the group toghether or he went in front as a windbreaker to provide a good speed, in the evening he will maintain his calves with a tube of “Energy legs”.

After the Briefing each team starts again for the way towards the sea. We are just in time for the Friday Night Skate in Amsterdam. After a short track in the morning and some sightseeing tours in the afternoon to the flower markets, the architectural highlights of the city or the redlight district in the old part of the town, we meet again at the starting point of the nightskate in the Vondelpark.

The two representatives of the Londoner Nightskate have already prepared their Soundmachines. The FNS Springtime route begins with dancing skaters around the music boxes.

The FNS Springtimetour for Skatefresh participants is a great tour around the city center with music and enthusiastic spectators in the streets.
After the tour the Skatefresh 2006 surprises us with another highlight: a midnight sightseeingtour by boat.
The next day we leave Amsterdam for the Haarlemermeer further on along the runaway lanes of Schiphol airport to the North Sea. On our way we finally reach the long desired tulip fields and windmills. A picture book of Holland.

Skating through the Dutch Montains, we end up at the North Sea with its never ending beaches.
We reached the final destination of the Skatefresh Springtime Tour 2006 at Scheveningen.

It’s now time to say goodbye to old and new friends:
• the crazy dentist from London who loves to skate with his hard-top case on the campingground,
• the 63-year-old American from Seattle who does for recreation purpose helmet-headstands, stretching his skates against the sun,
• the merry guy from Israel with his son’s little helmet or the Swede who keeps on dreaming of a skatetour from Stockholm to Peking,
• the cultural skaters from Paris. They finish an expanded skatetour with a picknick offering baguettte, vin rouge, fromage and pâté (Attention! don’t forget the checkered blanket!)
• and of course the two crazy guys form London and their ingenious soundmachines.

In case you think you know the craziest skater of the world already, be aware there is still another one which is crazier….

Result: Skatefresh was again an unforgettable tour. We are still overwhelmed of the impressions and we are looking forward meeting some of these people again at any skate-event somewhere in the world.
